Purpose
The purpose of Headway is to provide a safe and pleasant environment where adult consumers of mental health services can interact socially with others who understand their mental illness and where employment and daily living skills can be acquired or re-learned.

Services Provided

  • Clubhouse
  • Support Employment Program
  • Transitional Employment Program

Clubhouse
The Headway clubhouse utilizes a "work oriented day concept." Club members and staff colleagues meet at 9:15 a.m. Monday through Friday in one of three work units (Communication, Kitchen, and Administration) to volunteer for work assignments.

All tasks have evolved from those which are deemed necessary for the adequate functioning of the program or those which are essential for the promotion and advocacy of the consumers it serves and the education of the community of which it is a part.

All activities, while strictly voluntary, are encouraged by colleagues in order to assist individuals develop and improve employment related and daily living skills. These include

  • Writing of a daily publication for in-house information and a monthly publication "Headway Headlines"
  • Preparation of daily lunch or specialty items for parties or for sale in the snack bar
  • Tracking club member attendance for purposes of billing
  • Outreach to club members who no longer attend or to those community residents who can benefit from services Headway provides
  • Maintenance and aesthetic improvement of our physical environment

Supported Employment Program
Jobs in the community are developed through a collaboration with Headway employment specialists and the Missouri Division of Vocational Rehabilitation case managers. Individuals who have a diagnosis of mental illness and who apply for vocational services through Vocational Rehabilitation are eligible for on-site job assessment, job development, and on-going job coaching.

The Supported Employment Program guarantees the employer:

  • Pre-screening of consumers to match job skills and preferences
  • On-site training and supervision
  • Quality productivity standards
  • Long-term follow-up support for employers as well as participating consumers.

Transitional Employment Program
While similar to the Supported Employment Services model, Transitional Employment involves program managed positions in the community. Clubhouse staff, after learning the specific tasks of a job, place and train club members for periods of up to six months. At completion of the term specified, another club member will replace the present employee who, in turn, will assume another Transitional Employment or independent job placement. Employers are guaranteed the work of these entry-level positions will be completed to their satisfaction either by employee assigned or job coach.
