What is a Clubhouse?
The "Clubhouse" model is based on a program developed by the Fountain House Program located in Manhattan, NY. Inherent is the "belief in the potential productivity of the most severely disabled psychiatric client" and "a belief that work, especially the opportunity to aspire to and achieve gainful employment, is a deeply generative and re-integrative force in the life of every human being; that work must underlie, pervade, and inform all of the activities that make up the life blood of the clubhouse." The clubhouses (Headway and Harmony) provide “work adjustment” services for individuals not yet ready for referral to Division of Vocational Rehabilitation or placement in jobs. These individuals may be more appropriately placed in transitional employment positions and/or in community volunteer endeavors until they are ready for full-time placement. The clubhouses utilize a "work oriented day concept," in order to accomplish this objective. Club members and staff colleagues meet in the morning Monday through Friday in one of three work units to volunteer for work assignments.
