Restoring Smiles, Restoring Hope

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

Many people take good dental health for granted, but for those who are underinsured or uninsured, dental services are not easily available.

As a result, many of these people live with chronic dental problems that can affect their overall health and well-being. In addition to health problems, poor dental care can also be a source of social embarrassment for those with visible problems.

PRIMO funding allows Crider Health Center to provide much needed dental services to the underinsured, uninsured and those receiving Medicaid. One family who recently relocated to St. Charles County from Texas has had hope restored because of dental services provided to them by Crider.

“We had just moved up from Texas, and we didn’t have any insurance,” said Christina. “My kids needed dental work done. I needed teeth pulled.”

Dr. Dustin Mace, a previous State Loan recipient, who now works as a dentist for Crider Health Center, extracted several of Christina’s teeth at a reduced cost. He then referred her to a specialist who could complete upper and lower dentures for her, restoring her chewing function as well as her smile.

“My daughter had braces for two and a half years that had not been taken care of,” said Christina. As a result of the lack of orthodontic maintenance, her daughter, Talisha, was in a great deal of pain from having brackets left on her teeth. Crider was able to refer her to a local orthodontist who was able to remove the brackets at no charge to the family. Later, Dr. Mace was able to restore parts of her teeth that had decayed, increasing Talisha’s self-esteem by giving her ability to smile without being embarrassed.

“I had been to other dentists before and they were always really rough with my teeth. But

Dr. Mace is not just here to do his job. He actually cares about his patients and their teeth,” explained Talisha. Because of PRIMO, Crider was able to employ Dr.

Mace and the dental program at Crider Health Center was able to treat 1,210 patients last year, including 505 adults and 705 children. These individuals would not otherwise have access to dental services because of their financial situation.

In addition, PRIMO funding has helped Crider provide a dental sealant program in Franklin County. Crider Health Center developed a school-based dental sealant program for a large number of high-risk children with susceptible permanent molar teeth. The program intends to treat more than 4,750 children in all ten Franklin County school districts. In addition to the dental sealant, the children participate in an educational program to learn skills for better oral health. The benefit of treating children within the schools is that there is no risk of appointment cancellation and no additional transportation or expense required of the parents. So far, the program has treated students in five of the school districts, and plans to treat additional school districts this year.

April 10, Come to The Franklin County Dental Fair!

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

Crider Health Center now offers dental services in Union.  The current Crider dental offices in Washington have been relocated to a new location at the Union Clinic, 1780 Old Highway 50 East.  As part of Crider Health Center’s commitment to serving the families of Franklin County, the office is hosting a free dental health fair on April 10, 2010, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The dental fair, Crider Health Center’s second in two years, is open to any Franklin County families who wish to attend.  Parents are encouraged to bring their children to get a free dental screening.   Dr. Dustin Mace, DDS, Crider Health Center’s dentist in Union, will be performing the screenings.  Dental health educational information will be provided to all guests of the dental fair as well.

“I am looking forward to the opportunity to educate families of Franklin County about their children’s dental health,” said Dr. Mace.  “Proper dental care can make a world of difference in the lives of these children, and our dental fair is one of the many ways Crider is giving back to the community.”

Roughly one-third of children (ages 6-19) at or below the federal poverty level in Franklin County has untreated tooth decay.  The low-income population in this county is far less likely to receive adequate treatment for dental health.  Statistics show that low-income children have twice the prevalence of tooth decay as children from higher income households, and their disease is more likely to go untreated.  In addition, few dentists practice pediatric dental care, and even fewer participate in Medicaid.  Crider Health Center is helping to solve this problem by providing pediatric dental care to families on Medicaid and also providing access on a sliding fee scale to those without insurance.

Crider Opens New Health Center in Union, MO

Friday, January 1st, 2010

The significant health care challenges facing Franklin County make the new Crider Health Center in Union vital to the community.

“This new health center will be a vital resource in our community and we are proud of the progress we are making toward the health of our residents,” said Franklin County Presiding Commissioner Ed Hillhouse.

Currently, only 12 pediatricians serve Franklin County, making it a highly underserved area. 1 A staggering 22 percent of the population (22,400) is on Medicaid or uninsured.2 Because this is such a medically neglected area, many children live without the basic health care they need.  One example that illustrates the critical need is that children without health insurance in Franklin and adjacent counties are 180 percent more likely to be hospitalized for pediatric asthma than those who are privately insured.3

“Crider is taking steps to address a growing problem by providing pediatrics to residents who are on Medicaid or are uninsured in addition to accepting private insurance,” said Greg Roeback, Vice President of Integrated Care at Crider Health Center, who is overseeing the project in Union.

Currently, Crider operates an outpatient behavioral health clinic in Washington, Mo.  Relocating this clinic to Union will enable Crider to serve current patients better and accept new patients.

In addition to pediatrics and psychiatry, Crider has plans to offer dental services in Union.  The current Crider dental offices in Washington will be relocated to the new Union location within the next several months.  Statistics show that low-income children have twice the prevalence of tooth decay as children from higher income households, and their disease is more likely to go untreated. 4  Crider’s new Union location will continue to treat underinsured children who would not otherwise have access to dental services.
