Organizations Join Forces to Provide Needy Kids with Health Screenings, School Check-Ups and Backpacks Full of School Supplies

2nd Annual Back to School Health Fair

WENTZVILLE, MO - Crider Health Center, the Salvation Army, Calvary Church West, NECAC, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield and other local organizations will again join forces to put on the 2nd Annual Back to School Health Fair Friday, July 23, 2010, 10 am – 1 pm at Calvary Church West to benefit the under resourced families in Lincoln County.

Last year, over 1,000 attended this free event and 500 children received backpacks full of school supplies. Families also received health screenings, school check-ups, lunch, face paintings, and free hair-cuts.

This year’s event features free school check-ups and health screenings by Crider Health Center including dental, vision and lead.  600 backpacks with school supplies will be handed out on a first come, first serve basis to children grades K-12.  Families can also enjoy refreshments, children’s activity booths, a bounce house, a visit from the Rascals Mascot and free hair-cuts.  Health plan information and information on area health services will be distributed to all attendees.

“We understand that many families struggle to provide even the most basic needs, especially around the back to school season,” said Steve Martinez, VP of Development at Crider Health Center. “We are very excited to have gained participation from so many of our community partners to make this event possible a second year.”

Restoring Smiles, Restoring Hope

Many people take good dental health for granted, but for those who are underinsured or uninsured, dental services are not easily available.

As a result, many of these people live with chronic dental problems that can affect their overall health and well-being. In addition to health problems, poor dental care can also be a source of social embarrassment for those with visible problems.

PRIMO funding allows Crider Health Center to provide much needed dental services to the underinsured, uninsured and those receiving Medicaid. One family who recently relocated to St. Charles County from Texas has had hope restored because of dental services provided to them by Crider.

“We had just moved up from Texas, and we didn’t have any insurance,” said Christina. “My kids needed dental work done. I needed teeth pulled.”

Dr. Dustin Mace, a previous State Loan recipient, who now works as a dentist for Crider Health Center, extracted several of Christina’s teeth at a reduced cost. He then referred her to a specialist who could complete upper and lower dentures for her, restoring her chewing function as well as her smile.

“My daughter had braces for two and a half years that had not been taken care of,” said Christina. As a result of the lack of orthodontic maintenance, her daughter, Talisha, was in a great deal of pain from having brackets left on her teeth. Crider was able to refer her to a local orthodontist who was able to remove the brackets at no charge to the family. Later, Dr. Mace was able to restore parts of her teeth that had decayed, increasing Talisha’s self-esteem by giving her ability to smile without being embarrassed.

“I had been to other dentists before and they were always really rough with my teeth. But

Dr. Mace is not just here to do his job. He actually cares about his patients and their teeth,” explained Talisha. Because of PRIMO, Crider was able to employ Dr.

Mace and the dental program at Crider Health Center was able to treat 1,210 patients last year, including 505 adults and 705 children. These individuals would not otherwise have access to dental services because of their financial situation.

In addition, PRIMO funding has helped Crider provide a dental sealant program in Franklin County. Crider Health Center developed a school-based dental sealant program for a large number of high-risk children with susceptible permanent molar teeth. The program intends to treat more than 4,750 children in all ten Franklin County school districts. In addition to the dental sealant, the children participate in an educational program to learn skills for better oral health. The benefit of treating children within the schools is that there is no risk of appointment cancellation and no additional transportation or expense required of the parents. So far, the program has treated students in five of the school districts, and plans to treat additional school districts this year.

Crider at Warren County Health Fair

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

One of the many ways Crider Health Center is getting involved in our local communities is through various health fairs held all over St. Charles, Warren, Franklin and Lincoln Counties.  On March 27, Crider was represented at the Warren County Health Fair.  Dr. Michele Niemczyk, Crider's very own Warrenton pediatrician, gave a presentation at the event.  Thank you to all who came out to this fun and educational day!

Warrenton New Pediatric Patient Promotion in March and April

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

Michele Niemczyk, DO has joined Crider Health Center in Warrenton as a pediatrician.  As part of a promotion to increase the number of pediatric patients in Warrenton, Crider is offering a chance to win 4 free tickets to Six Flags.  Click here to learn more about the promotion.

“The opportunity to treat children who need pediatric services the most is rewarding for me as a physician,” said Dr. Niemczyk.  “I look forward to getting to know the families in this community and helping to keep their children healthy.”

Currently, very few pediatricians serve Warren County, making it a medically underserved area.  A staggering 25 percent of the population (7,808) is on Medicaid or uninsured. Because this is such a medically neglected area, many children live without the basic health care they need.  One example that illustrates the critical need is that children without health insurance in Warren and adjacent counties are 180 percent more likely to be hospitalized for pediatric asthma than those who are privately insured.

“Crider is taking steps to address a growing problem by providing pediatrics to residents who are on Medicaid or are uninsured in addition to accepting private insurance,” said Greg Roeback, Vice President of Integrated Care at Crider Health Center.

Dr. Niemczyk has been a pediatrician for more than five years.  She received her BA from Central Methodist College and later received her DO from Pikeville College School of Osteopathic Medicine in Pikeville, Ky. in 2002.   She completed her pediatric residency at St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria, Ill. and has been practicing pediatrics in Washington, Mo. since 2005.

Crider Health Center Warrenton is located at 1428 North Hwy 47, Suite B, Warrenton, MO 63383.  For appointments, call 636-456-1500.
